ANOTHER HONOUR FOR FOOTBALL HERO BRENDAN

Just eight days after being presented with the East Midlands UMBRO Football Heroes award for his contribution and dedication to football in the local community, Radcliffe Olympic Football Club Publicity Officer Brendan Richardson, 33, found himself again centre stage as he was honoured by his own Club.

Brendan whose own promising footballing career, was dramatically ended by a tragic accident in 1991 which left him paralysed, was taken completely by surprise during the half time interval of Olympic’s home fixture against Pinxton, when he became surrounded by a number of Club officials and supporters.

Brendan proudly receiving the Dave Bullas Spirit award from Elaine and Sam Bullas.

All soon became clear, as the Senior’s Representative Roy Crewe announced to Brendan that he had been chosen as the first recipient of the Club’s prestigious new award, the Dave Bullas Spirit Award, in recognition of Brendan’s personal qualities and the considerable amount of work done by Brendan in maintaining the Club’s Website, producing the matchday programmes and raising sponsorship money for the Club.

The new award had been introduced by the Club in honour of the late Dave Bullas its former Vice Chairman, who died in 2005 aged just 46. Dave, also a Deputy Head at Dayncourt school, had left a huge footballing legacy both in the Radcliffe area and further afield. Dave was not only remembered as a founder of youth football in Radcliffe, but also fondly and with respect for his sportsmanship, his vision, his passion for football, his humour, enthusiasm, and his determination to succeed against the odds, amongst many other positive attributes. Roy Crewe emphasised that the award had been introduced as a permanent reminder of those characteristics, and to recognise those connected with the Club who demonstrated those same qualities.

Mick Aspley, a Club Officer, who nominated Brendan for the award said “Brendan was a keen and enthusiastic player who, along with the rest of the squad shared Dave’s passion and belief in football. Brendan has shown great determination spirit and guts to overcome personal tragedies, yet continues to be passionate about football and the Club, his vision for ROFC to be a major force is immense…”

The day was made extra special for Brendan by the appearance of Elaine Bullas, Dave’s widow, and his son Sam, who presented him with the award.

To add to Brendan’s joy his beloved team then ran in 5-2 winners over Pinxton.

WHY BRENDAN'S DEDICATION IS JUST FANTASTIC

Article in The Evening Post 22/09/07

A Football fan who has overcome disability to devote his life to his village team has been honoured with a national award.

Brendan Richardson works seven days a week for his beloved Radcliffe Olympic FC, raising support and producing the club programme and website. The 33-year-old, who was left paralysed from the neck down after an accident, is also credited with helping transform it from a pub side to one of the leading local amateur clubs.

In recognition of his work, he has been named the Umbro Football Hero for the East Midlands. Only nine people have been picked throughout the country for their contribution to the sport. They were nominated by people in their community.

Brendan said he was pleased at his award. "It is great to be recognised like this," he said.

Brendan played for the men's first team when he was just 16 in the 1990/1 season. But his world came crashing down in February 1991 when he was injured in a sledging accident in Radcliffe. He slammed into a tree and crushed vertebrae in his spine. Brendan spent three days in intensive care at the Queen's Medical Centre and six months in rehabilitation in Sheffield. "But I went straight back to school in September," said Brendan, who attended Dayncourt School in Radcliffe. "It was important to get back to normality."

After completing an English and Media degree at Nottingham Trent University, Brendan returned to the club as its publicity officer. "The website needs constantly updating with results, and I edit the programme for every home game for the first team. "I also get the advertising for the programme and try and get as many people to the ground as possible."

As well as the title, Brendan scooped tickets for a top game at Wembley Stadium, a set of playing kits and a plaque for the Radcliffe Olympic FC clubhouse. Nottingham Forest winger Kris Commons, who presented Brendan with his award at the clubhouse yesterday, said: "It is quite astonishing the commitment that Brendan puts in. "For someone to go through what he has, and then put so much back into the community - it is a real credit to him and the club."

Roy Crewe, vice-chairman of Radcliffe Olympic FC, said: "Brendan works very hard for the club. Financially he has raised significant funds by his dedication. He does a fantastic job."

Premiership great Alan Shearer, who is the Umbro Football Heroes awards ambassador, said: "Brendan is a true football hero. "His contribution to the game and the community is immeasurable. People forget about the hard work done behind the scenes by amazing individuals like Brendan."

Every year the Radcliffe Olympic Football Club, junior section designates one of our football training sessions to a special Family Charity Day. We ask all our players to get family and friends to sponsor them to undertake various football skills. We have donated £5,000 to deserving causes over the past few years.

This year we decided to help the RSPCA Animal Shelter in Radcliffe on Trent. This year we held it on June 9th 2007. The RSPCA made a presentation on how the money raised would be spent. Approximately ninety children and their families turned up on the day and participated in various football sponsored fun activities, which included shooting, passing, dribbling, crossbar challenge and tug of war, we also held a Mums versus Radcliffe Junior School lady teachers football match and a Dads crossbar challenge, a raffle and various stalls all helped to raise £1,500 on the day.

We presented a cheque for £1,500 to Louise Sheppard and David Stern from the RSPCA on September 1st 2007, we hope that this helps towards their valuable cause.

This statement has been prepared in response to an article published on the front page of the Nottingham Evening Post on Saturday 25 August.

1. The Club has discovered anomalies in the accounts of one of its sections bank accounts. We have no reason to believe the accounts of the main club and other divisions will become under investigation.

2. The relevant authorities have been notified of these concerns and an investigation is ongoing.

3. The anomalies do not relate in any way to funding provided by The Notts County Council and Strategic Enterprise towards the feasibility study of new playing facilities.

4. The allegations that £10,000 is missing is wholly inaccurate and the police investigation is not based on this line of inquiry.

5. It does not involve any sponsorship money or donations, and any such monies will be spent as intended and agreed with the donor.

6. All teams that have not already been provided with new playing kit from our new kit provider will receive new playing kit this season.

7. Rushcliffe MP, the Rt Hon Ken Clarke is not involved in this investigation and Radcliffe Olympic FC is extremely honoured to have him as its Club president.

8. As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to make any other information public at this time.
