Around The Counties - 28/01/12
by Stan Wilton

It has been a splendid eight days for BARROW TOWN who followed up their 6-3 win at Heanor last week with a tremendous 4-0 win over HOLBROOK SPORTS. Jon Coppard, Jamie Allen and Carl Adams put the home side on course in the first half hour of the game, and Ryan Page added a fourth with twenty minutes left.

For HEANOR TOWN the season gets worse. A splendidly taken goal by Ryan Amoo put THURNBY NIRVANA ahead on eleven minutes and Matt Melbourne added a second four minutes later. Lions leading scorer Nathan Benger saw his 33rd minute penalty superbly saved by James Flinders but beat him with a second on 47 minutes. Goalkeeping errors at both ends provided Brett Marvin (63) for Thurnby and Keiran Debrouwer (85) for the visitors with goals in a game with tempers flying, three off and two booked.

BORROWASH VICTORIA strengthened their promotion push with a 4-2 win over ST ANDREWS at the Arena, but it took two stoppage time goals to do it from Tom Leighton and Lee Sutton. Keiran Linnett had put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half time with Shane Newton levelling after 57 minutes. Linnett, with his fifth goal in three games, restored the Saints advantage on the hour only for Dave Moon to restore parity on 72 minutes and the home side to take the points with their late burst.

If they can turn their games in hand into points OADBY TOWN will be on course for a quick return to the Midland Alliance, but they didn't have things all their own way against a rejuvenated GREENWOOD MEADOWS at Greene Park. It took 72 minutes for the deadlock to be broken by Jon Stevenson, but Jack Hopper equalised seven minutes later. Dan Wilson got the winner with seven minutes left.

Two defeats in a week have left ELLISTOWN at the bottom of the table. Their 2-1 midweek defeat at RADFORD was followed by a 5-3 reversal at GEDLING MINERS WELFARE for whom Bradley Wells scored four times. Kieran Wells got their fifth. All this happened though after Sam Saunt on 14 minutes and Carl Benson on 46 had seemingly put the visitors in control. Scott Goodman got their third nine minutes from the end only for Bradley Wells to put the issue beyond doubt in stoppage time.

Ricky Saxby gave BLACKWELL MINERS WELFARE a fourth minute lead on their visit to BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC. Goals from Danny O'Donnell and Stephen Cox early in the second half gave the visitors a comfortable 3-0 victory.

A hat-trick from Jamie Kirkby in the first 28 minutes of the game put HOLWELL SPORTS on the way to a welcome three points. Chris Hibbit got a fourth just before the break. Paul O'Callaghan pulled one back for BARDON HILL on 57 minutes but Sports held on for an excellent win.

Goals from Alex Bolt and Tom Cooper-Richards in the first half hour gave GRAHAM STREET PRIMS just the start they needed on their visit to IBSTOCK UNITED. Rich Wileman pulled one back just after the break but Lee Fell restored the two goal advantage and three points for Prims on the hour.

If ELLISTOWN had a poor week, RADFORD enjoyed one of their best. They followed their 2-1 midweek win over their basement rivals with an impressive same score win over ANSTEY NOMADS at Selhurst Street to really lift their spirits. Richard Dean gave the Nottingham side a 15th minute lead only for Leon Thraves to restore parity twenty minutes later. Danny Pownall got the winner on 62 minutes.
